Certification Levels

Certification: Beginner Linesman

Purpose

The purpose of the "Beginner Linesman" course is:

  • to prepare a young or new official to officiate as a linesman; and
  • To further enhance the training and skills of youth hockey officials.

Registration/Guidelines for Certification

The registration/guidelines for "Beginner Linesman" certification are:

  • to attend and participate in all sessions of a "Beginner Linesman" clinic;
  • to complete a written national association examination and obtain a minimum of 70%;
  • a recommendation that the minimum age to obtain a "Beginner Linesman" status is 15 years;
  • an on-ice evaluation should be performed by a qualified National Association Official's Development Program Instructor; and
  • a recommendation that the officials go through the on-ice skating evaluations.

Delivery

A minimum of ten hours instruction.

Note

  • Upon completion of the "Beginner Linesman" requirements the official will receive a certificate designed by the National Association.
  • Completion of the clinics should include a successful result in both the written examination and the on-ice evaluation.

Certification: Level 1

Purpose

The purpose of the "Level 1" course is:

  • to prepare a young or new official to officiate youth hockey competition; and
  • to further enhance the training and skills of youth hockey officials.

Registration/Guidelines for Certification

The registration/guidelines for "Level 1" certification are:

  • to attend and participate in all sessions of a "Level 1" clinic;
  • to complete a written national association examination and obtain a minimum of 70%;
  • a recommendation that the minimum age to obtain a "Level 1" status is 15 years;
  • an on-ice evaluation should be performed by a qualified National Association Official's Development Program Instructor; and
  • a recommendation that the officials go through the on-ice skating evaluations.

Purpose

The purpose of the "Level 2" course is to prepare officials capable of officiating junior hockey competition, top levels of youth hockey, and at an introductory level to national senior competition:

Registration/Guidelines for Certification

The registration/guidelines for "Level 2" certification are:

  • to be fully certified at level 1 and should officiate a minimum of one year at that level;
  • to attend and participate in all sessions of a Level 2 clinic;
  • to obtain a minimum of 80% on a written National Association examination;
  • to pass a practical on-ice skating evaluation performed by a qualified National Association Official's Development Program Instructor;
  • to be judged capable of officiating junior hockey competition; and
  • to be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Delivery

The delivery mechanism for a "Level 2" certification are:

  • a minimum of 12 hours of instruction; and
  • a thorough knowledge of the playing rules and the role of an official.

Note

  • Upon completion of the Level 2 (clinic, examination and on-ice evaluation) the official will receive a Level 2 certification designed by the National Association
  • A novice official, 16 years of age or older, may obtain Level 1 and 2 certification in one year based on ability. This is the only opportunity within the National Association Official's Development Program to accomplish two levels in one year. This is designed to encourage persons with playing or coaching experience to consider officiating.
