SHARNITA CROMPTON QUALIFIES FOR INAUGURAL WINTER YOUTH OLYMPICS!!

NORTHSTARS (Club Press) - Innsbruck, Austria will host the inaugural Winter Youth Olympics in January 13-22, 2012 when approximately 1,000 athletes aged 14-18 years will compete in a program based on seven winter sports which were featured at the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010.While Australia doesn't have an ice hockey team to field for this competition there is a new Individual Skills event on the program and our very own Sharnita Crompton will be a part of it.Sharnita, along with Sam Hodic from Victoria, travelled to Finland on July 5th where they attended a camp and took part in the qualification event at the International Ice Hockey Federation's development facility in Vierumaki. The pair competed against the best young players in the world in a series of intense skills tests for speed, shooting accuracy and agility. The top 15 men and 15 women from nations not qualified in the team events were selected to compete in Innsbruck 2012 and both Sharnita and Sam have made the team.Sharnita broke her "most favourite" stick on the second day of preparation and not being able to replace it borrowed a fellow competitor's stick for the qualification event.Sharnita first took to the ice at the age of 12 and within a couple of years was being selected for representative teams and State teams for both mixed and women's teams. In February this year we saw Sharnita wear the Australian jersey when she competed in the Division III Women's World Championship in Newcastle.Sharnita has attended the Finland facility before when she attended an IIHF development camp so has an idea of the level of standards of the girls she'll be competing against. She has also attended a camp in Canada in 2010 which has helped in her preparation for this event. For her family the hours of travelling each week, from the Central Coast to Newcastle or Sydney, to get Sharnita to games and training is paying off.
