ECSL Grand Final

Picture: East Coast Super League 2012 Champions ECSL (Club Press) - Congratulations to both the Newcastle North Stars and Reach Rebels on making it to the grand final, and further congratulations goes to the North Stars for becoming the 2012 East Coast Super League Champions. The Reach Rebels got off to a strong start, dominating the North Stars for the first two periods thanks to a strong offensive effort from their 'Midget' players, Chris Shepherd, Cameron Todd, Yucca Reinecke, Casey Kubara and Tyler Kubara proving particularly challenging for the North Stars players to contain. Sustained pressure by the Reach Rebels in the first period gave the home side great scoring opportunities, with #4 Cameron Todd helping the Rebels to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. Shots were 11-1 in favour of the Rebels. #9 Michael Casaceli added the Rebels second goal early in the second period. His shot from the high slot taking a deflection off the stick of North Stars defender #25 Mattias Kocher, to beat goaltender Josh Broekman over his right shoulder. For the most part the North Stars were lacking their usual high intensity, however, with the game at 2-0, and with just seconds remaining in the second, North Stars #12 Adam Kimbley was rewarded for his determination putting the North Stars on the scoreboard. Shots on goal after the second period were Rebels 24, to the North Stars 5. Whatever Coach Joey Theriault had to say during the break had its desired effect. As the Rebels began to slow, the North Stars returned to the gameplay that had seen them make their way from second last place in the league table to a Grand Final berth, in just a few short weeks. Their patience was rewarded with the game equaliser 4:27 remaining in the third thanks to a goal by #96 Nick Quirk, assisted by Matt Wetini and Tim Stanger. With scores locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time, the game went into sudden death overtime. Overtime proved to be a spectators delight; it included fatigue, desperate defence, determined offence and solid goaltending from both teams. The Rebels started overtime strongly, taking every opportunity to get shots on net, and looking to secure Back to Back ECSL titles. Excellent goaltending by Broekman kept his side in it, and with just 45 seconds left in the first overtime period, #98 Damian McIntosh pounced on a rebound shot from Matt Wetini, scoring the game winner. Final Shot count finished Rebels 32-16.Both teams played spectacularly and proved that the final game of the season was anybodies game. The North Stars not only secured an nail biting Game 3 Grand Final overtime win, but also the new Warwick Griffith Trophy, awarded to the East Coast Super League Champions. The Grand Final is the culmination of a massive year for the East Coast Super League. The six team competition has been the closest it has ever been, with the final 2 spots in the playoffs coming down to the final round of the season. The League is the highest level of full contact hockey played in NSW (apart from the AIHL) and is planning on developing the league further in time for Season 2013. If the competition and excitement level from this year is anything to go by, next year will be even bigger and better!!Mark Bradford
